What is a .sig file?

A file ending in .sig, such as “contract.pdf.sig”, is an electronically signed document. Your computer can't open it on its own, but this page shows the document and the signature straight away.

The file never leaves your device.

What is inside a .sig file

Usually a CAdES signature from qualified signing software, such as the Polish Szafir, proCertum SmartSign or Sigillum. The name tells you what was signed: “invoice.pdf.sig” is a signed PDF, “report.xml.sig” a signed XML file.

  • Enveloping signature: the document is inside the .sig file. That one file is all you need.
  • Detached signature: the .sig file holds only the signature, and the document is a separate file, such as “contract.pdf” next to “contract.pdf.sig”.
  • Some software saves a XAdES signature as .sig. We open both kinds.

How to open a .sig file

  1. Click “Open a .xades file” at the top of the page. The same button opens .sig files.
  2. Choose the .sig file. If it holds only the signature, add the signed document next.
  3. Read the document, check who signed it and save it as a PDF.
